This year, our work inside Canada's startup ecosystem expands in a way I've been looking forward to for some time.
I'm returning to MaRS Discovery District for a fourth consecutive year, joining the Momentum advisory team — the cohort of Canadian companies that have cleared product-market fit and are scaling into real revenue. I'm also serving as a guest advisor at IDEA Mississauga and at Le Camp in Québec City, extending our reach beyond Toronto for the first time.
And Jonathan Wong begins his inaugural year as Expert in Residence, Finance at the DMZ at Toronto Metropolitan University — one of the country's most established startup incubators. Jonathan brings over a decade of finance leadership from OpenText and Rogers Communications, where he oversaw a $2B media portfolio and led budgeting, forecasting and long-range planning.

The financial questions founders face aren't the same across these programs, and that's what makes the range useful.
At the incubator stage — where much of the DMZ's cohort sits — the work is foundational:
At the acceleration and growth stage — MaRS Momentum, Le Camp's acceleration track — the questions shift entirely:
Same discipline. Very different conversations.
Advisory work inside these programs isn't the commercial core of our practice. We do it because the alternative is worse: founders reaching CFO-level guidance only after the first term sheet arrives, when the expensive decisions have already been made.
Most early-stage companies don't fail for lack of vision. They struggle with execution under financial pressure — and financial pressure arrives long before most teams are structurally ready for it.

Canada's early-stage companies are the base layer of the economy's growth, and the institutions supporting them — MaRS, the DMZ, IDEA, Le Camp — do genuinely difficult work with limited resources. Being useful inside those programs is among the more meaningful things our practice does.
We're also pleased to share that Kwantum Advisory has been selected as a preferred vendor to the DMZ, providing fractional CFO leadership, financial advisory and operational accounting support to its portfolio companies.
For DMZ founders reading this: the front door is a complimentary one-hour financial strategy consultation. No purchase required, no obligation. If it's useful, we'll talk about what comes next. If it isn't, you've lost an hour and gained a second opinion.
The focus this year remains what it's always been:
Help founders make better financial decisions, faster.
