On Saturday, August 29th, about 500 Starlight children and family members came to the track and spent the day being driven around it. It was my third year as one of the drivers, and it does not get less affecting with repetition.
Drive For Smiles is Starlight Children's Foundation Canada's signature automotive fundraiser — the largest of its kind in the country, and the event Starlight kids and families consistently rank as their favourite of the year. The format is simple and it works. Volunteer drivers bring their cars. Children living with serious illness climb in as co-pilots, and take professionally managed, safety-controlled laps around a real circuit with their families watching from the wall.
That simplicity hides what the day is actually for. Serious childhood illness takes away the ordinary things first — school, birthdays, sleepovers, the small unremarkable moments that make up a childhood. Treatment schedules dictate the calendar. Kids who are used to being the patient in the room, watched over and worried about, spend most of their lives on the sidelines of their own lives.
For a few laps, that reverses completely. They are the ones strapped into the good seat. They are the ones everybody is watching. Nothing about the day is medical.
You notice it in how the parents say thank you. It isn't the polite thanks you get at a fundraiser. It comes from people who have spent a great deal of time in hospital corridors and are, for an afternoon, watching their child simply be a child — loud, delighted, unmonitored. Several families told us it was the first normal day they'd had in months. The organizers said afterwards that every driver leaves the track carrying a story they'll keep. Mine is a small hand throwing a peace sign out of the passenger window at speed.
Since 2013, Drive For Smiles has raised more than $5 million and created over 10,000 of these rides across Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. This year's Toronto event brought together roughly 60 cars and drivers and set a local record: close to $270,000 raised for Starlight Canada's programs.
Kwantum Advisory's campaign contributed $7,400 of that total.
We got there by trying something new. Most drivers fundraise through a personal appeal — you email your network, people give because they like you, and it caps out quickly. This year we offered businesses something with actual value instead: season-long logo placement on the car, running from June 1 through September 30, across 20+ track days, Cars & Coffee meets, touring events and Porsche Club of America: Upper Canada Region gatherings. Four months of genuine exposure, priced honestly, with every dollar going to Starlight.
Five businesses took it. They are the reason that number is in the thousands rather than the hundreds, and they are named below.
The season runs to the end of September, so their logos are still out there. We'll be back next year, and we intend to raise more.

JP's Fine Auto Detailing — jps-fineauto.com Our largest supporter, with a $3,000 in-kind contribution covering the design, production and installation of every decal on the car for the full season — which meant the campaign ran with essentially no production cost and every sponsor dollar reached Starlight. Founded in Oakville in 2019 and still run hands-on by JP himself, the shop is Halton's leading Gyeon-certified installer, specializing in ceramic coatings, paint protection film, paint correction and bespoke detailing.
Breedon Mor LLP — breedon.ca A Barrie-based litigation boutique acting across Ontario in medical malpractice, personal injury, commercial disputes, professional regulatory defence and appeals. Founding partner Ryan Breedon is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, teaches trial advocacy at Osgoode Hall Law School, and argued and won Armstrong v Ward at the Supreme Court of Canada in 2021. Jessica Mor joined as partner in 2025.
